Restoring smiles with Brookswood and Langley, BC area dental crowns

Sometimes a dental filling simply isn’t enough. Maybe your tooth is broken, fractured, misshapen, or severely decayed. A dental crown is a straightforward, cosmetic restoration that can repair these and many other types of tooth damage. Dr. Harpreet Aulakh of Smile365 Dental in Langley, BC and the Brookswood, BC area offers several options to meet your needs.

How dental crowns are used

The crown is one of the most familiar and versatile dental restorations. It is designed to fit over your tooth like a cap, providing cosmetic and functional restoration as well as protection. Situations that may require a dental crown include:

  • Restoring a badly worn down or broken tooth
  • Keeping parts of a fractured tooth together and protecting it from further damage
  • Holding a dental bridge in place
  • Repairing a decayed tooth that is too weak for a filling
  • Covering a dental implant
  • Protecting a tooth after root canal treatment
  • Repairing a misshapen tooth
  • Correcting cosmetic problems that cannot be addressed with veneers or bonding

The dental crown procedure

During your consultation we will discuss treatment options and explain what to expect. Dental crowns can be made of metal, porcelain, or PFM (porcelain fused to metal).

Most patients prefer porcelain for aesthetic reasons, as it mimics the appearance of natural tooth enamel. Whatever type you choose; the procedure can be completed in just a few office visits.

The first step in the process is preparing the tooth. This includes removing the damaged or diseased part of the tooth, and then shaping it for optimal retention. Impressions are taken before and after tooth preparation. Your dentist will place a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth.

Your permanent crown is created in a dental laboratory, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. When it is ready, you will return to our office for the next appointment. Your dentist will remove the temporary crown and clean the tooth, then double-check the color, fit, and appearance of the new crown, Lastly, the new crown is cemented in place.
