Impacted Wisdom Teeth Symptoms and Treatment
Most people, at some point in their lives, experience their wisdom teeth coming in. Sometimes they emerge easily, while other times can cause problems. If these molars lack space to grow, they may become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can be painful and put you at risk of decay, bite issues, and gum disease. Impacted wisdom teeth removal from Smile365 Dental in Langley, British Columbia, can eliminate pain and prevent future problems.
Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth can sometimes be problematic, but they are not always an issue, even if they’re impacted. If your teeth are not causing problems, they may not need to be removed. If these teeth become infected or cause pain and discomfort, Dr. Harpreet Aulakh may recommend extraction to relieve pain and avoid complications in the future. Symptoms of infected wisdom teeth are:
- Foul breath/taste in your mouth.
- Inflamed/bleeding gums.
- Swollen jaw.
- Jaw pain and discomfort.
- Difficulty opening your mouth.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth Treatment
Impacted wisdom teeth removal is done through outpatient oral surgery. Impacted molar tooth extraction can eliminate painful symptoms, facilitate cleaning and chewing, protect surrounding teeth, and help maintain your oral health. This procedure can be done with local anesthesia. If the thought of extraction makes you nervous, we can also give you a sedative to help you relax for your treatment.
Dr. Aulakh will start by making an incision in your gums to remove bone obstructing access to your impacted tooth. After removing this bone, we will use forceps to loosen your wisdom tooth. Occasionally, the tooth may be broken into pieces for easier removal. After the tooth is extracted, we will close the incision in your gums with stitches. The entire process may take 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
After the anesthesia wears off, you may feel pain along with swelling and bleeding. This is normal. We will provide you complete instructions on how to manage these symptoms and post-operative care to speed up your recovery.
