My Crown Fell Out! What Do I Do Next to Protect My Dental Health?

When Dr. Harpreet Aulakh restores your tooth with a dental crown, we expect it to serve you for about 15 years. Unfortunately, like most things in life, your crown may not be 100% perfect, and it may fall off before the replacement is due. When this happens, there is no need to panic — these are the steps to protect your oral health.
Call your dentist immediately.
A dislodged, loose, or fallen-out crown is a cause of concern because it exposes the underlying tooth to infections and further damage. When this happens, the first person to call is your dentist. Your dentist will give professional advice to save your crown and prevent pain. Depending on your symptoms, your dentist will advise whether you need a same-day dental appointment or if you could wait for an appointment later.
Clean and rinse your crown
Since your crown may be salvageable, rinse and store it in warm water. Your dentist will inspect it to see if it can be re-installed, which will save you the cost of a new crown.
[call]Be gentle when eating and cleaning your mouth.
Stay away from sticky or hard foods, and avoid chewing on the side of the affected tooth. Don’t stop your oral care hygiene, but do it gently. Mildly brush around the affected tooth to avoid irritating it.
Consider a temporary adhesive filling
As you wait for the right care, your dentist may recommend an over-the-counter dental adhesive placing on your tooth. Remember, this is a temporary fix. You should still see your dentist for proper dental care.
We will inspect your tooth and crown when you arrive at our dental clinic. If your tooth has become weak or infected, your old crown may not fit properly, requiring a new crown. Otherwise, if your tooth is intact, we may be able to make a few adjustments to your current crown and reinstall it.
