What is the Recovery Like After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Dr. Harpreet Aulakh of Smile365 Dental in Langley and Brookswood, British Columbia, offers a wide selection of quality, comprehensive dental services for patients in the community. This encompasses both simple and surgical removal of wisdom teeth. The wisdom teeth, referred to as the third molars, are the last teeth that erupt through the gum line, though they can become problematic for many of our patients. Removal is done right in our office, and we educate patients on what to expect after their procedure, so they are well-educated on the recovery procedure following teeth removal for dental impaction and other concerns.
What to Expect from Recovery Following Wisdom Tooth Removal
It’s normal to have some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort after wisdom tooth removal. This is particularly relevant, especially true for patients undergoing surgical wisdom tooth removal compared to simple wisdom tooth removal. Here’s what you can do to help ensure a smooth recovery regardless of which type of extraction you undergo:
- Bleeding. You may notice some bleeding immediately after your surgery, which is normal. To help control the bleeding, bite on a supplied gauze pad for up to 45 minutes. If the bleeding persists, replace the gauze pad and bite for an additional 45 minutes. Repeat this process as necessary.
- Swelling. To help reduce swelling after the procedure, apply an ice pack or even a frozen bag of vegetables, such as peas in a soft towel to the outside of your cheek for twenty minutes. Do this as much as possible for the first 24 hours after surgery.
- Discomfort. Following your surgery, you may notice some minor discomfort To help manage the pain, take over-the-counter pain medication as directed by Dr. Harpreet Aulakh. You can also use a special saltwater rinse to cleanse your mouth and help reduce pain. Mix half teaspoons of salt in a cup of warm water and rinse for thirty seconds several times a day.
